La Plata Getaway
It is an excellent alternative for those willing to see and enjoy more of the large urban centers of Argentina.
This magnificent city was founded in the late 19th. Century and its urban design was based on plans made by the great Jules Verne. La Plata is also known as the
"City of Diagonals" because of its numerous diagonal streets that run from different avenues. This city boasts a remarkable European style, for its layout and design,
and a geometrical perfection. The city has a noticeable concern for green areas: there is a park every six blocks. La Plata is an example of a well-planned metropolis,
and it is best to visit it during the afternoon.
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral of La Plata is one of the main tourist attractions. It is the largest neo-Gothic Temple of South America. Although its construction
began in 1884 and the Cathedral opened in 1932, it wasn't until 1999, when the towers where completed and construction works finished. From one of these towers, it
is possible to get a good view of the city's layout and the perfect rhombuses shaped by the diagonals throughout the city.
Once at the Cathedral, take a stroll through the beautiful Mariano Moreno Park; the city's major park; that will surely be full of students that come to La Plata
from all over the country. The City Hall is also a must visit attraction. This landmark building, located opposite to the Cathedral, was built in 1886 and features a
Renaissance style.
Also worth visiting is the Teatro Argentino de la Plata (La Plata Argentine Theater) that was also inspired by the Renaissance style architecture. The theatre offers
a very interesting and vast cultural program.
The Curutchet House is one of the two buildings by Le Corbusier in the Americas. The Teatro Argentino de La Plata is the second most-important opera house in
Argentina after the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
The University of La Plata was founded in 1897 and nationalized in 1905. It is well-known for its observatory and natural history museum. Ernesto Sabato graduated
in physics at this university; he went on to teach at the Sorbonne and the MIT before becoming a famed novelist. Doctor René Favaloro was another famous alumnus.
The city of La Plata has the particularity of being the only place in the country where the burning of Momos (Dolls similar to those cremated at the Fallas festival
in Valencia, Spain) is held every New Year's Eve. Hundreds of dolls are burnt to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of a new year. Competitions for the
best doll is awarded by the La Plata municipality and media.
In addition, every year on November 19, the anniversary of the city is held with recitals and a fireworks show at the Plaza Moreno.
In La Plata, as well as in all of Argentina, the first day of spring is celebrated along with National Student's Day on September 21. On this date, the municipality
organizes concerts both in the Paseo del Bosque and Plaza Moreno.
