The Cementerio de la Recoleta was established in 1822, together with the confiscated church and convent of the recently expelled Franciscan monk of La Recoleta, in the outskirts of the village. As the elegant areas of the city shifted north after the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1871, this area then became a part of the urban network. Until private cemeteries became popular at the end of the 20th. century, La Recoleta was the most exclusive and elegant cemetery. A tour through the cemetery shows the opulence of the oligarchical families of Buenos Aires in the early 20th. century, as seen in their allegorical figures of eternity, made of Carrara marble by the best sculptors of the age, from Tantardini (Virgen Dolorosa en J.F. Quiroga) to Lola Mora (Lopez Lecube). The Cementerio is open every day from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The Iglesia del Pilar is another work of Buenos Aires's prolific Jesuit architect Andres Bianchi. It was consecrated in 1732 and completed by Juan Bautista Premoli; at the end of the 19th. century, it was "beautified" to such an extent that architect Andres Mille had to clean it up, restoring it to its original austere aspect. The church's interior consists of one nave and has an altar from Alto Peru (Bolivia) with a silver front that was decorated with repousse by Jujuy aborigenes (natives).
